Whats your average deer shot distance?
As a new hunter I'm curious to know the average distance for a shot at a deer for your hunting style.

Please list:

rifle and calibre
Scope magnification
Scope sight in distance

I'm primarily a bow-hunter, so my shots probably average 25 yards.

I hunt in the woodlands of Georgia, so even when rifle hunting I'd guess the average shot would be around 50 yards. No green fields or power lines are available to me.

My rifle of choice now is an AR-15 I assembled last year in 6.8 SPC, topped with a Trijicon AccuPoint 3 - 9 X 40 sighted in for 200 yards. Definite overkill for my hunting conditions, I admit.

I leave the scope dialed down to 3X unless I'm trying to get a better look at the animal's attributes.

Shortest modern gun was 60 yards with a 44 mag carbine. Longest was 110 yards with a .300 win mag. Was hunting power lines was planning on a long shot rifle was way to much overkill as the rifle is sighted at 300 yards. Luepold mark 4 on it, can't remember the magnification. The .44 was iron sights. Keep my black powder hunting to around 50 yards. cheaply made Walmart scope on it.

Hunt one area in mountains, SW Virginia- Laurel thickets, revolver- 25-50 yards (can't see further!) Muzzle loader, T/C 50 cal, 50-100 yards. Centerfire rifle, typically 50-150 yds, although I do hunt one area with a large broomstraw field that deer walk headed down to lake. Distances well established, shooting from support, may go 200-250 max. EDIT- Sorry- .243 or .308, typically 3-9 on 4 power. Shortest ever was in a shotgun only county, about 15 yards.

We have hills and not many long distance shots too, all mine have been within 100 yds with a mini 6.8 and mini 14 with a 3x9 Nikon and Leupold.

My longest deer shot was maybe 325yds. ( most our woods are thick) with a .308

As you are seeing it all depends upon the terrain and the area you live in. In Tennessee 50-100 Yards. 308 Winchester Model 700. Leupold 3.5X10. When I hunt in Texas 100 Yards to 250 Yards with Remington 700CDL 7MM Rem. Mag. and 3.5X10 Leupold.
But I would have to say for the majority 50 to 100 in most states.

As you can see Davy its a hard one to answer we all have our different terrain and preferences. I have taken deer in Scotland on open terrain at 300 yards plus and in pine Forrest at 25 yards. Good hunting, great name by the way :D
