Mine was a .50 cal percussion Hawken Rifle. I don't recall who the manufacturer was but it was a kit gun I built back around 1980. I was still living in IL at the time and it was the only alternative to a shotgun with slugs. Had a lot of fun with that gun until I had to sell it to help finance grad school.

It is, MO. But it's interesting how life shakes out. When I returned from Vietnam in 1970 I never went hunting again. The prospect of going out in the woods with a rifle didn't appeal to me any more.

Those Mausers are some nice rifles! and that 7mm rem mag has been my go to cartridge for nearly 25 years now.

If I recall correctly, they were a bit out of range. I still have this 12 ga. The next year, I was given my first true deer rifle....A Marlin .35 Remington. I loved (and still do) the lever action concept. However, at that age I could not hit the broad side of a barn with it. (I would love to have it back to shoot it now!) My Dad made me hunt with it for a couple years...missing deer after deer. A couple of years later....he surprised me with a Ruger M77 Mark II in a .270 caliber. I was extremely successful with this firearm....I think it was more of a confidence thing over the Marlin. A few years ago, I was in a place where I had no time to hunt due to work....sold it to a buddy. Now that I am back into it....I prefer a 30.06. and yes...wish that I had all three in the safe...rather than just the 30.06!
Nice story apw,
I'm sure those 12 gauge slugs were a hand full for a 10 or 11 year old? The first year or two with my 06' when I was 10 or 11 was a learning experience to say the least

Rem 870, I live in a shotgun state, my first rifle I used on a whitetail was my BAR in .30-06.

Winchester 94 in .30-30. That wouldn't group on a paper plate at 100 yds from a bench, with any load. Dumped it for a Mauser 98 in .308, which was a great rifle.

Winchester model 88 in .243, great gun for deer and coyotes without much recoil seeing as I was 12 when my dad gave it to me as a deer hunting rifle.
