Axxe55 I really like the 243 and 6mm rem, they just seem to be a good all around deer/varmint.

In my minds eye I can still see that forked mulie jumping out of a thick brush and timber patch in the Blue Mountains here in Eastern WA., at about 50 yards, after being bumped by a guy that was hunting with us.
I swung the gun up just like I was pheasant hunting, not even sure I looked thru the peep, just swung thru the bucks neck right at the base.....Boom.....As soon as I came back on the buck from the recoil, there he laid....not even a twitch. Right thru the base of his neck.

Yea, I know. Pure Dumb A$$ luck, but, it set in motion a love of hunting and the outdoors that has lasted till a few years ago....Don't hunt anymore. I've killed enough.
Sorry for the length of the post, just got a little melancholy.

Nice story and post, seems like we never forget that first deer

Starting with the Rem 742 in the 06' when I was young 10 or 11 years old,I will admit my first year or two I struggled with the 06' and should've listened to my Dad and bought a smaller cartridge for my first high powered rifle.

Nearly 40 years of hunting deer my Rem 742 woodmaster is long gone,I still have a Rem 7400 in 30-06,(old habits are hard to kick ) For the past nearly 25 years now i've been using a Remington 700 in 7mm rem mag deer/elk rifle, it's my favorite hunting rifle.

I was 13 when a neighbor talked my gun-hating mother into allowing me to buy a Winchester 94 in 30-30 to hunt with him. I felled my first deer at 75 yards with iron sights through thick brush and fell in love with that gun!

First rifle is a 1976 rem 788 in 308. Still have too with the original 2.5-10 scope still on it. Stocks been refinished and cut 1" shorter for a recoil pad.

Don't have a deer rifle nor do I hunt, I would like to though, but the first rifle powerful enough to humanely take a deer with was my Mosin-Nagant 91/30.

Hardluk I hear a lot of great reports on the Rem 788 in the accuracy department.
