My first deer rifle was an old military 30-40 Krag. peep sights, side magazine, Accurate, Heavy, and borrowed from my Step Grandpa. He was kind of a jerk and wasn't real hip on me going, but he did put me on to my first deer, and for that I will always be grateful. That was 40 years ago.
In my minds eye I can still see that forked mulie jumping out of a thick brush and timber patch in the Blue Mountains here in Eastern WA., at about 50 yards, after being bumped by a guy that was hunting with us.
I swung the gun up just like I was pheasant hunting, not even sure I looked thru the peep, just swung thru the bucks neck right at the base.....Boom.....As soon as I came back on the buck from the recoil, there he laid....not even a twitch. Right thru the base of his neck.
Yea, I know. Pure Dumb A$$ luck, but, it set in motion a love of hunting and the outdoors that has lasted till a few years ago....Don't hunt anymore. I've killed enough.
Sorry for the length of the post, just got a little melancholy.
