Glad to hear you ventured into shooting and enjoy it.
Some people just don't care for or to shoot guns for various reasons? Some people hate them?? Not sure why?
We always made hunting/shooting a family thing, getting together with uncles, aunts, and cousins. Just fun times with no accidents.

My Dad had a bird dog way before he had me...He grew up on the farm and hunted and fished in his spare time. There was NO way I wasn't going to be a hunter lol

I was hooked when I fired some guys stainless .38 and some black ( beretta ? ) 9mm when I was 10 in 1987 and as soon as I was old enough to buy one I bought 3 2 marlin 60s and a Daisy 2022 bolt action all .22's ( acutally got caught by the police with the daisy loaded on my front seat and he thought it was a bb gun cause it was plastic with an octagon barrel . Good thing he didnt rack the bolt or a .22LR woulda came flyin out and ida been in a pile ah crap taller than I was ) And it was over .

But I'm glad you got to have those experiences. I wish I coulda said similar. It woulda been cool. But I've never really done nothing with my old man ( as many times as I'd asked) I was adopted and I'm thinking it wasnt his idea lol

Sorry I'm getting off topic here ill be quiet . I just wanted to say all of you who got to share the sport with your families are lucky .

Sounds like a very fun project with a lot of great memories,my Dad bought a lot of stuff from Herters in 60s.

Thanks for sharing.
In the 60's , the back page of the Shotgun News had all the bargains. An M1 Garand could be had for $80, Italian Carcano carbine for $19 . I salivated over every issue. What could be more fun for a teenage boy !

Those prices are amazing compared to what we see today!
When I was a very young boy I used to thumb through Dads Herters catalogues wanting and wishing for this and that Herters offered through mail order, better than the Sears catalogue

Hahaha I understand the anticipation waiting for shotgun news,I had a subscription years ago,my wife was wondering if we were in the same zip code some evenings?? haha

My first experience with guns escalated from shooting a .22 to pulling both triggers on a double barrel 410 in one day :P but for deer hunting I used a Remington model *7* .243 as my first gun. The next year I used a savage model 111 30-06 and never switched

Those 243s have taken a lot of deer.
Good choice with the 06',the caliber all other cartridges are compared to for over a century now.

Marlin 30-30 the first year then saved enough to buy a Winchester 670 in 30-06. But, I've always gone back to the Marlin.

My first deer gun was a Winchester Model 42. It was then used by my younger brother the next year when I was given my Dad's Winchester Model 1894, which was his first deer rifle bought fir him by my Grandfather. That's what I still use.
