Be it a .458 or a howitzer, if you don't hit them in the right spot you are SOL.
I've really enjoyed using the 7mm rem mag.,I just have a lot of confidence in the cartridge and rifle that I use which is a Rem. 700 bdl.
I hunt a lot of large crop fields with timber and creeks bordering the large fields, the 7mm rem mag really reaches out there flat and hard.

The Nosler 160 grain Partition is the only bullet I load anymore for the 7mm rem mag,I started using them years ago on a Elk hunt,a very impressive bullet.

That was my very first deer rifle,I wish I still had the rifle, the bolt lugs and receiver lug inserts went bad and I ended up trading the rifle for a Rem 7400 in a 30-06 which I still have.
The 742s had some nice wood on those rifles!

You're the second member to post using the 6.5mm Carcano, looks like good ballistics for deer hunting.

Remington 7600 in .30-06. dad & grandpa bought it together for me to use my first year. shot 3 deer with it in my teens but being that I was about 140 pounds soaking wet at the time, that '06 could really put the hurt on me. if I didn't get 'em with the first shot that was it, the recoil made it hard for scrawny little me (at the time) to get back on target for a follow up.

that being said, I do wish I had that gun now.

Nice those Rem 7600 nice deer huntin' rigs!
I started out with a 06' as my first deer rifle, for a young and just starting out hunter IMO the 06' is a bit too much recoil, but an excellent cartridge for North America hunting.

Marlin 336 30-30. I still break it out every once in a while and carry it on a hunt.

That's one sweet rifle and cartridge starting out on.
I was actually an adult when I first started hunting and it was my father in law's gun, we are in Michigan and the reason for such a gun here is that he bought it with dreams of having a gun that would be suited for out west if he ever got the opportunity to hunt out there. The first deer gun I actually owned after that and hunted with success with, was my late grandfather's Marlin levergun in .444 marlin.

And another thing about that .270 Weatherby Mag is that it saved my first hunt. The first hour of the first day, I successfully harvested an 8 point 175-200 lb buck from a 40 yard shot. This cartridge was no way designed for this, but the only shot I had was a front on, and I was anxious and just fired, and because he had the gun loaded with, I think a 90 grain hot magnum load, the bullet only went in a few inches and just exploded the heart and lungs to jelly before it could go into the guts.It was a good day.

My first was a Lee-Enfield .303 British. My dad cut the stock down so it would fit me better and not be so heavy.
