Default What is your favorite Buckshot Hunting load?

What is your favorite buckshot load for hunting? What choke do you use for buckshot and how far would you take a shot at a deer?

Mostly rifle hunt nowdays. When I lived in a buckshot only county, it was 12 g OO, Modified, 40 yds tops. Your mileage may vary.

Default Buckshot/slugs?

I have not killed anything other than paper targets with my Mossberg 500A
with a 20" ic barrel as it is mostly for home protection & my best choice for
it has been 3" mag #4 buckshot & 12 ga 1oz slugs. I have had some fun with
it firing #6 game loads on clays & it is what I have been carrying when I have
filled my big game tag as Pop tries to fill his! I "tricked mine out" with a pistol
grip & a pistol grip foreend & a top folding stock with a 6 round side saddle
ammo carrier. Thanks to "Tac-Star"! (When it sits in my gunrack... I have
even got a "thumbs-up" from many leo's)!

i have taken 30-40 deer with a 12 ga. under 50yds oo buck full choke is good but dont shoot the shoulder. a slug works well out of a smooth bore 70-100 and is like hitting them with a cannon ball. a 20 ga is good to about 50 but unless you have hunting restrictions get a rifle

I have taken plenty of deer with buckshot out to 60 yards. I am using a full choke mossberg with 3" 00 buck. Most have been less than 45 yards, 2 have been at 60. I prefer my 30-06 but some of the places I hunt are pretty thick swamp bottoms. I would pattern the shotgun with a couple different loads so you will know what to expect. Mine will hold a winchester round out to 65 yards, but a remington 00 only patterns good out to 45 yards for me.

I like Dixie Tri-Ball Buckshot with bigger pellets and tighter patterns from my 870.

Here is a picture comparing Tri-Ball buckshot with the same weight of 00B.
