Best will depend on shooter preference. I prefer a 165.

I use 150gr because I dont' think anything more is needed for whitetail and I like that it's a little flatter shooting. It is also available in factory loads with a number of different bullets and since I reload, there is A LOT of load data.

In all honesty, I wouldn't be afraid to use anything from 130gr to 180gr for deer here in NC, although 180 is a bit heavy. If you go to 200+ you might get some funny looks.

150gr has been enough to put down every deer I've shot with a .308 for years...

.308 for whitetails
Very simple ........Winchester 150 grn ....PowerMax hollow points in the red box ....developed specifically for whitetailed deer ... I have used them and they perform as advertised .

I like the Sierra 165 gr. Gamekings both the HPBT and SBT in my .308s. The reason is that the point of impact is very close to the 168 gr. Matchkings that I use for target shooting and I only have to change my zero by two clicks of elevation. Here in Georgia the 150 should be a very good choice and I hunted with them for many years in .30-06.

150 grain Hornady SST.

What rifle and twist? What type of of terrain (open ground, brush, forest, etc.)?

That said, 165 grain Barnes TSX Boattails or 168 grain Berger Match Hunting VLD with absolutely none of the rifle information provided. As said above it will be personal preference.

I would say between 150-168 should be in the range to kill a deer.
