We use everything from 22 magnum's to the 458 SOCOM to harvest them,it all depends on the size of the hogs we find.[/QUOTE]

You have it so Lucky first time I ever heard of a 458 SOCOM. (google helps) Bit to slow for buffalo, must do a good job on pig.

The 458 Socom shoots the 405 gr jsp (same bullet from a 45/70) at about 1650 fps which is almost the same speed from a trap door 45/70. A couple of the guys on the 458 Socom forum have taken buffallo with the 458. One guy was getting complete pass through on broad side shots with the 350 hornady round nose. Not bad from a 16" AR.

I mainly want to hunt wild hogs, I went on a wild hog hunt as a kid and used my 3030 it worked well, but would like to use something in an AR platform.
Many states do not allow hunting larger game with a 223. You can look at Federal hunting codes in your state and it will give you a acceptable caliber size for all game. Many public hunting grounds have a list of calibers that are not accepted hunting weapon calibers. Always check you state and federal codes on hunting.

Default 338 or 35 whelen

I have long range rifles for hunting. I prefer a 338 for its power and distance when hunting large game. I also use a 35 whelen because it has long range and knock down power. I also own a M24 and M21 as well as M14 and many other weapons. I also like a 308 caliber weapon. My favorite handgun is a model 59 9mm that was used in the military when I first started with a 15 round clip. I prefer that over all other handguns but that is just my preference.

I was under the impression for quite awhile that .223 was too light for hogs and stuck to 7.62x39 only in my semi-auto rifles. I was wrong though. I got my first AR-15 a few weeks ago and decided to take it for a spin on hogs just for the hell of it. I ran up on a ~300-350 pounder, put a couple of Federal hollow points in him, and he probably got about 15 yards before dropping. Not bad at all IMO.
I will say the 7.62x39 will drop a damn big hog on the spot (assuming good shot placement of course), but that kind of damage isn't required for me. All in all I'm happy with the AR-15 in hog hunts, and will use in the future for the sake of accuracy (over my AK).
