I tried my hand at trapping in the late 70ís. I had several leg hold traps set on the creek behind the Nicholson house and had caught a few opossum, minks and raccoons. I had heard that a raccoon would
gnaw his own leg off to get out of a trap but I had never experienced it. One evening when checking the traps, I found one of them tripped with nothing in it except a foot of a raccoon. I reset the trap and returned home. When I went to bed that night, I could not sleep. I kept seeing that three legged raccoon hobbling around in the woods weighing heavy on my mind with guilt. It was raining hard and about 10 PM, but I couldnít stand it anymore, so I went to the creek right then and took up all my traps and never reset them again.
