I have to applaud your ethics.

.308 is great but I would suggest .270 win. .270 is a necked down 30-06 and packs a hell of a punch and is faster than a .308. 130 gr bullets reach speeds of over 3000 fps. I've taken mulies down up here in MT with .270 with spine shots then gutted it and found chunks of the spinal column had punctured lungs and heart just because of the force of the impact. Its a devastating round with less recoil and muzzle blast than a .308.

Well t/y my freind , im half native american and was just brought up to never shoot unless you are sure it will be a clean and as painless a death as possible , And ill never leave a wounded animal to die slowly for my inabilty to do it right first time , Unfortunatly not all hunter"s up here are like that they dont find it in 10 mins they just look for another ,to me that is an unforgivable sin , and has sent me to being very picky who i let hunt with me.More hunters should be this way and when i first started hunting people had ethic,s ,they seem to be dissapearing now in this part of America anyway,s.

My state (NY) until now, only let us use bows, crossbows, shotguns, and muzzle loaders for deer

Is the 308 or 270 the perfect deer rifle? My 6.5x55 begs to differ Literally tack driving accurate, devastating terminal performance, and kicks so light I get to watch them drop through the scope, cannot do that with my 308 or my 270.

Buy a rifle in any caliber from .25 up and use descent bullets and the animal in question will die if hit properly. The reason I say .25 instead of .24 is angled shots. The .24 caliber guns are instant death on deer sized game out to 250 yds if the game is broadside but big deer are tough and an angled shot may or may not punch int the vital zone. The .220 swift is my favorite deer gun IF all shots were inside 200 yds and I could be assure of the perfect broadside shot. Alas that is seldom the case. I use a .270 or 6.5x55 now for 95% of my deer hunting anymore.

I own rifles, shotguns and handguns. I hunt big game with rifles often but. Hunting with a handgun in my opinion is way superior to rifle and shotgun hunting. It is more challenging. You have to get closer usually but. That's why I like it so much. That and im a handgun nut!
