The only gun I have now is a pre ww2 Browning a-5 that I don't want to hunt with because it could be worth something someday. I guess a lot of guns isn't a bad thing, but I'm 14 years old, and my only income is 35 dollars every week for mowing 2 lawns, so I probably won't be able to buy that many guns (I would love to though). I have about $2500 saved up from mowing.
You saved up $2,500 from mowing lawns at $35 a week and you're going to buy a gun with it? You are the most American man I know.

Buy both. You can buy a Ruger American or savage axis & a scope as well as a shotgun for clays & fowl. You actually should be able to get a REM 700 and a decent scope & a Mossberg 500 plus ammo with that kind of money. But if it comes down to a rifle or shotgun for deer, everyone will prefer & recomend a rifle. Probably a well rounded 30 cal. Like a 308 or 30-06

I have the Ruger American .308 and it's a darn good rifle, and I do hunt the ranges that he is talking also, but usually an average of about 40 yards. Right now I would recommend a .30-06 over the .308 because I have seen no .308 ammo anywhere but gobs of .30-06 ammo.

Well as ya see in the pics i have the moss 500 and 4 diff barrels 50cal muzzleloader barrel,18.5 inch home defense,26 inch adjustachoke , and the cantilever scope mount barrel i can hunt anything with it in north america, i still will never agree on a shotgun over a rifle if i had a choice unfortunatley here in Ohio we have no choice and a 30-30 he could pass on to his son one day and start him out right instead of a slug gun just my opinion after hunting with a shotgun for yr,s not for me i have a choice, i use a 50 cal optima now.Drops em on spot 99% of the time.395 grain hornady fpb,125 grains pyrodex.Real deer slayer . but i am only one person just been hunting deer with shotguns for yrs never liked it.Give me the rifle. Mossberg also makes a great cheap bolt action now, in many calibers that will work for deer. And is damn near cheaper than a 500 pump.Guess we all have our thing.

It will depend on your State and county that you will be hunting in. My State requires, shotgun, muzzle loaders and revolvers (357 mag or better) for deer hunting.

Here in Indiana we used to be limited to shotgun or muzzle loader, with a separate archery season. Then they allowed handguns (.357 or better). Now, we can also use pistol caliber rifles. I've used all three over the years, and have hunted in other states where I could use a rifle like my .308 Mauser. If money is no object, I would certainly recommend the rifle as first choice. However, consider that by getting a combo shotgun outfit it will allow you to hunt both deer and other game.

Same dumb rule,s here in Ohio,357 cal or larger straight walled cases only and no rifles no matter what the cal , when i choose to i use a scoped ruger, blackhawk in 45 long colt 7.5 bbl. i load very heavy from hornady manual 21.0 grains of win 296 and 300 gr hornady xtp,s cronoed at 7 yrds at 1250 fps plus.drops em dead right there but kinda like bow hunting with a pistol i like the challenge ,still will never get me to use a shotgun over a rifle if i have the choice.i would not try with the pistol in that cal at anything farther than 60 to 70 yrds but at that range it is devasteing on whitetail here in Ohio. maybe after a lot of practice this off season i could stretch it to 100yrds.after that im not that good yet .Not with a handgun.
