Shotgun vs. rifle for deer

My county has recently opened the land to rifle hunting. We used to only be able to use shotguns, bows, and muzzle loaders.(Broome county, NY). Should I get the Mossberg 500 with the rifled cantilever barrel or a .243 bolt action rifle for white tailed deer. In NY the range that we see deer is very limited (20- 150 yards at the stands that I go to) so I was wondering if a rifle is necessary or if I should just get the shotgun.

Get a 308 Win., best Whitetail deer round on the planet, JMHO.

Others' mileage may vary.

For the most part, any place that hunters CAN use a rifle, they do. So buy a rifle.

The only situation I choose a shotgun is in Louisiana when we are using the hounds and I expect a close shot at a moving target. 00 buck out to 50 yards or so.

Hunting from a stand or still hunting, use the rifle if legal and safe to do so.

If you miss and hit a bear, it's OK; you can tell us.
:D

Some people down here in MS use them for hunting in brushy areas; they say slugs don't deflect off the brush as bad, though I haven't tested that.

+1 on the .308 win.

OR, in your case where most shots will be under 200yds. a 30-30 win., or .308 Marlin lever action would also be a great choice, especially with the new Hornady Leverevolution ammo.

OR, for a buck busting rifle that combines the knock down power of a 12 ga. and the "reach out and touch someone" aspect of the .30 cal. rounds, a Marlin 1895 in .45-70, is a great choice and I find it comparable to my 12 ga. slug gun in recoil. You'll never need more gun.

The 308 ammo is hard to find, I would go with 243, 270 or 30-06.

If your option is a 12ga or a .243 I would go with the .243. I have used mine to kill just about everything and it kills well. If another rifle caliber is an option I would suggest a 30-06.

Another thing I like about the Mossberg 500 is that it comes with the rifled barrel, scope, and a bird barrel. With that, I can basically hunt anything that lives in NY. If I got a rifle just for deer, then I would have to get some other guns for other game. The only gun I have now is a pre ww2 Browning a-5 that I don't want to hunt with because it could be worth something someday. I guess a lot of guns isn't a bad thing, but I'm 14 years old, and my only income is 35 dollars every week for mowing 2 lawns, so I probably won't be able to buy that many guns (I would love to though). I have about $2500 saved up from mowing.

Depends on your distance. Even a nice, accurate slug guns with super accurate sabot slugs is maxed out at 100 yards. Past that you should consider a rifle, caliber is purely personal preference. 30-30, 7.62x39, 243, 30-07, 7mm-08, 7mm REM mag, 6.5 creedmoor, 6.8 spc, 308win, 308 marlin, 300 win mag. Just a few of you options for deer. Your choice depends on range, size of deer, your accuracy, your preference of damaged meat vs knock down power, sholder sensitivity, familiarity with weapons platforms, & more contribute to your choice. Specifically tell us your experience, what you've shot before, range etc., & we in this forum will gulp as best we can. :-) final decision is your ofcoarse.
