The boiler room is where the heart and lungs are located.

In my opinion, risking a head shot on a deer is not very sporting. A deer starving to death because someone missed the head shot and blew off their jaw is not very cool. Each hunter has his/her own set of ethics. I prefer to take the boiler room shot. If that shot does not present itself, and I have a clean chest/neck/head shot, I may take it. But I must be confident that I can make the shot.

I disagree with always going for the head shot because it's cool to do. That is not very sporting.

With shoulder shots just besure you have enought bullet to do the job, Useing a small bore with a highly disruptive bullet does not work well on a shoulder.

Head shots should only be taken if you have a clear target and you are confident with your ability to place the shot where you are aiming and it will kill the deer. I do agree that too many hunters take shots they do not have the ability to successfully kill with wether it be a head, neck or any other part of the body. If I can't kill the deer with one shot I do not pull the trigger. I have passed on deer when hunting with others and they attempt to make the shot. Most times this ends in a miss, a second shot and or a long day of tracking.

What ever shot you make be sure that you are confident that it will kill what you are shooting at! There is no reason for a second shot!

Default Depends......

Shot placement depends on how the deer presents itself. Is he in a bean field feeding, chasing a doe through a thicket or just slipping along a creek in a oak flat feeding on white oak acorns. The hunters shooting ability has alot to do with shot placement. Not to mention how much them knees get to shaking when the time comes to pull the trigger. If I'm on a morning hunt I'll take a lung shot. If it's in the evening or a big ole buck I'll take the shoulder shot everytime. I've made a few head shots mostly on Doe's. Key is make every shot count.

Would a 308 at 150 yards or less be able to pull off a shoulder shot?

Yes a .308 won't have any problem. The only thing about shoulder shots is it ruins both shoulders. I don't use shoulder meat anyway so it's no big deal for me. I prefer a heart/lung shot but it's not always feasible.
