Almost all my deer hunting has been with my .30-06, but last season it was .308. The rifles I am using are inherently much more accurate than my old Remington 742 so I hunted with an M1A. I will use the '06 more this season since i would like to take at least one deer with one of my M1 Garands.
I will have to say now that my preferred caliber would be .308. Out of all the deer I have killed, only one has been with a factory loaded round and I just love the M1A/M14 type rifle. I fell in love with it in 1966 when the army issued me my first one.
So for me it is .308 all the way, but I still got my '06s.

I have killed deer with so many different calibers I cant remeber them all. 06 is my first choice over all close raange 30/30 works great mid to long range .243, A favorite in southeast alaska. shot place ment is the key whatever you use. I once killed a 3 point buck in my front yard with a .22 rimfire. I could,t use my 30/30 cause there were houses a few hundred yards beyond the deer and I couldn't find a .22 long rfle shell in the time I had to shoot it or lose it. .22 short behind the ear he dropped in his tracks less that 20 feet away

Ive used 30-06, 7 RM, 35 Rem, 243.
I could make a list of a bunch of guns i have, or "have", or wish I had. Why would one feel compelled to provide that infornation freely? Do you feel the need to show off? Is it some immature game of oneupsmanship?

Why do you feel it necessary to list your guns?

Wooooooh, To say that A .270 does not have the power is speaking from an unenlightened possition! Hundreds of thousand heads of large game in the US alone including deer, elk, moose, sheep and goat have been effectively killed with a .270. In many states a .22 centerfire larger then the Hornet is legal for deer. I have seen several taken quite effectively with a .22-250. The .270 generates significantly more power then the 30-30 which has probably killed more deer then any other round out there. I won't weigh in on what should you get, but I would feel comefortable with pretty much anything from a .223 on up knowing that I will have to be more particular with shot placement using the .223 and that would probably be my last choice; but it will get the job done very effectrively. P. O. Ackley has a very interesting chapter on the .220 Swift ability to kill large game in his book Handbook for Shooters and Reloaders, (Vol. 1 I believe) Anything on the 308 or 30-06 case will do just fine.

I use a .243 for most of my deer hunting. any thing much larger than white tail I use 7mm Rem Mag. I also have used .223 in Texas for white tail in the past and it also worked with one shot kills. And of course the old .30-.30 in the brush.

I've always stuck to 2 cartridges, the .308 for longer ranges and the .358 for closer.
Btw: I handload and load to whatever the range requires.

Im 74 years old and have shot mule deer with a number of different rounds. In 1953 I shot my first deer and last fall agin with a 270 Win. There are a whole bunch of different rounds that are good for deer hunting . First tune up the rifle and develope accurate reloads for it. Second learn how to shoot from different positions at various ranges so that you can put the bullet in the heart lung area. Iv taken out a few shooters deer hunting, I did the hunting they did the shooting, some were riflemen some were something else. There were no good rounds for the something else.
