Right now I do not have "preferred" cartridge. I shoot a 280/7mm express in a remington model 700 bdl. But the kick is kinda excessive for what I hunt, which is whitetail deer.

I also have a Marlin 336 in 30-30. Its an excellent round out to around 100 - 125 yards.

The rifle I want to replace my 280 with a 308. But I can not find a Savage bolt action 308 with open sights. It seems that open sights are becoming a thing of the past.

+1 for the Remington Coppersolid Sabot Slugs.
They are about the most expensive slug I have ever shot, but they do the job.

.270 will always be my number 1 choice for deer. I have been a big .270 fan since I killed my first deer with one when I was 13. LOL man I still remember that remington 700; it had a steel butt plate. Man that thing kicked hard, especially at the age of 13 (and I probably weighed like 130 lbs back then ha ha).

I used to use the 150 gr bullets but now I like the 130 gr since they travel a bit faster and have a little more shock to them when they hit the target. I guess I just like .270 because they shoot flat, have plenty of killing power, and are very good guns overall.

As for myself, I am partial to the 308, it has always done what ever job I point it at, It is a clip fed winchester lever action, also have a 300 weatherby magnun, 2 30-30 one a winchester golden spike commoritive, the other is a marlin, also have a 300 savage recoil action automatic, all have killed something. But as for the caliber, still partial to 308.

I enjoy shooting my .30-30, .270, and .30-06 for different reasons; but since you are making me pick one - the .30-06 is my "go to" deer rifle of choice.

However, with all that being said, my favorite is a Marlin lever action .32 Win Sp. It was my Dad's gun. He passed away 3 years ago and my Mom gave it to me on my birthday last year. I cleaned it up, sighted it back in, and took a deer with it on his land about 2 weeks later. It still gives me chills thinking about how I felt that day using it in his memory; I still feel the same way each time I pick it up - a lot of great memories.

here in western new york rifle hunting was just approved in the county i hunt in a few years ago . after trying several guns i'm settleing in with a rem. 742 in 308 . i do at times take different guns out with me . a ruger 77 in 280 with a long range scope for certain days and a very old marlin 30-30 when i'm "pushing the bush " as it is lite and fast to target with its iron sites . i would feel at a disadvantage with only one gun .
my slug guns sure dont get much use now that rifle is in season .....

Strange that there's so much difference in votes between the .308 and the 30-06, since they're ballistic twins and the .308 is a short action.
