When I used to hunt deer I took more with a Winchester Model 94 in .30.30 It proved to be an excellent brush gun.

Up here in my part of Canada, we use American made muzzleloaders. These .45&50cals work well, got one buddy with a cva .45 that has taken several deer at 200 yrds +.But i do agree that shot placement is everything!

Since when did the 270 lack power for deer? Its more than adequate for any deer it would go up against. They aren't that hard to kill.

ive read that the 25-06 is a great round and its a good one for moose too. but for experience i have no idea as we ohioans have to use slug guns bow, or muzzleloaders.

Personally I Have a 270. Decent power and range in a small package. I would like a 30.06, but those things are hell for sighting in.

Default Preferred deer cartridge

What range? What conditions? I have never missed or had to track a deer, I used a .243 w/ 100gr bullets, neck shots only. 3oo yds is my max shot so far.
As far as 30-06 vs. .270 thats a moot point, as both are quite capable of 1000 yd shots. I've made them with either. What you like and can hit with is more important than caliber. If you flinch from recoil and muzzle blast, you can't consistently hit.

These rounds are super cheap on the internet. 49 dollars (shipping included) for 150 rounds of excellent grade ammo. You can't beat that price.

I don't shoot farther than a couple hundred yards when I hunt, so I don't need anything that boasts 400-600 yard performance.

I'd sure like to see somebody consistently make neck shots with both .270 & 30-06 at 1,000 yards as you say!!!!!!!!I SERIOUSLY doubt you, or anybody other than a small handful can do it. If I'm reading this wrong I apologize. If I'm reading it right,I'm calling BS!!!

Never said they were consistant, only that the rounds were capable of making them. The reason I like neck shots is that if you hit, it's DRT. If you miss, better luck next time.
The whole argument of one cartridge over another is beating a pretty dead horse. It's all about bullet placement and conditions.
Reguardless of whether or not you belive me is irrelavant. A 30-06 is not so ballistically superior to a .270 as to make that much difference at any reasonable range.
