Default Pheasant shell question

Just wondering what you all would suggest to hunt pheasant with. It will be my first hunt and I will be using my pops' 870 12 gauge. I figure on a 3'' shell but not sure what shot # to use.

You don't need a 3"shell for Pheasant! A high brass 2 3/4 in six shot will do

fine....... Unless you like beating your shoulder up for no reason......

Been wasting pheasants with said since 1975......

I use 3" in my 20 ga., but 2.75 is fine in 12 ga.

I shoot Fiocchi Golden Pheasant #5.

Pheasant dont need 3" or big shot in a 12 gauge. When we used to have them here before the invasion of the flying bowling balls (Turkeys), they were my favorite hunt. I could cackle and call them in with the best of them. You really want to use the lightest loads possible cause they are more feather than meat/ bone and muscle. If you hit them solid with a larger load, all you ill see is a puff of feathers and all you will have left is trap bait.

It matters where your hunting how large you go, Corn fields that are standing are short shots, harvested fields are always long if you get a shot. I always went medium choke, longer barrel, light with the first 2 shots and heavier with the 3rd. They are very fast and often fly very low but in a relatively straight line, be careful if your using a dog that you dont shoot them! Grouse are the same but fly even faster and very erratic, if you hear them, they are already gone.

Good luck, enjoy, its the best hunting ever for sure!

I use standard pheasant loads in my 500 with the short barrel and I Max out every time.

better judged by twelve than carried by six.

I thought you used 6 shot for those birds.

Yeah I plan on eating these so I dont want it to look like Randy Johnson hitting that bird haha. So a lighter shot load then? Then place I'm going says no shot higher than #6

That explains it. I've been using #7 all this time. No wonder I could't hit those birds.

A lot does depend on if you are hunting wild birds or pen raised/released birds.

Based on my experience hunting wild birds in SD, I will continue to use #5 or #4 shot.

We dont get that many long shots around here even when we had Pheasant. I generally load 2 7s and a 6 for the possible chance they stay in sight that long. The bastards will run on the ground long distances before flying if they are hiding in the corn, again, if your hunting with a beloved dog, keep that in mind. My old springer was a little too feisty, if I didnt keep up with him, those birds were gone. Funny, one year we got alot of snow and Bogwan (Dude) bagged 2 himself, no shots fired! A few teeth marks, NBD...
