OP specifically said a rifle. 12 ga. is a gauge, not a caliber. It's great for a lot of things but even with a rifled barrel shotgun, it's still a shotgun.

didn't see that my fault but I still think its a good contender. I've seen just about every collector or hunter including myself has one and I don't believe in the slug. I was brought up using 00 buckshot. I think a slug tries to make a shotgun something it isn't in my own opion some people disagree that's there choice.
All im saying is that every season I hunt with my rifles but at least 4 trips I bring my shotgun and its brought down its fair share of meat

Lots of deer and pigs have died to the shotgun, but I wonder if anyone has taken an elk with one? Now that sounds like a challenge. AMBUSH!!!!

The 1st Mulie, and the 1st Elk I ever harvested were w/ an old Mossberg bolt action slug gun. I bought it New in 1976 for $60.00, it was a 12ga. Sold it 25 years later for $125.00. Wish I still had it. I was living in Colorado at the time.

These stories of the 12 gauge are nice and very true, however the OP wanted info on a rifle round. As good and as versatile as the 12 ga. is, and it's flat amazing what one will do with a rifled barrel and modern sabot slug loads, it's not a rifle.

The OP mentioned hunting in AZ.

That alone tells me that a lever gun, shotgun, or other platform is pretty much out as a 200 Yard shot will be considered "close" in a lot of the state. The terrain, game hunted, and type of game will dictate the caliber and platform in my opinion.

.270 WSM is very popular in AZ. I use a 25-06 and a .300 Win Mag throughout that state. I find the 25-06 to be a great class 2 game getter, deer/antelope, while the .300 is suited for elk, bear, and other game.
