600 yards is a hell of a shot. .308 or 300 win mag 30-06 7mm mag.

Where hunt here in WI, I would be trespassing if I shot a deer at 600 yards.
7mm mag, 300 win mag, maybe one of the WSM's, or drag out my daddy's 300 Weatherby elk buster.

the rifle and caliber are pretty much irrelevent if the person shooting can't hit accurately with it. that being said, how many times have you honestly shot at 600 yards accurately? to kill humanely, you had better be able to keep every shot within at least a 3-4" group to kill a deer. there ae plenty of rifles capable, and many cartridges that can do the job, but are you capable? this is really starting to move into the realm of being an unethical hunter if you are not capable of being that good a shooter. just my thoughts.

+1, practice, practice in the off season. Set up some targets 600 yards downrange from your stand and practice these shots.

on a side note, i will add this. as i said and some of those suggested, there are many calibers that can hit well at 600 yards, that's a given. but you might want to invest in some very high quality optics to be able to hit at such distances. rule of thumb here is, you can't hit what you can't see.

Since 90% of the deer use a given trail I would just move my stand so I was 75 yards from the trail. I know you would like to be able to cover all you can see but it's not ethical. Any of the sporting rounds anyone mentioned is going to hit like a 9mm handgun at 600 yards. You can get a 50 cal BMG and make 600 yard shots ethically.

A 300 Wby shooting 165 grain Nosler ballistic tips drops 29.23 inches, has a velocity of 2379 feet per second and 2073 foot-pounds energy at 500 yards, just a tad more than a 9mm.
Lots of guns and ammo are capable, the average shooter, not so much.

I'm a very good shot. If you want to be a douche bag about being unethical don't reply I've never taken a shot at a deer I didn't think I could make that's why I'm wanting to upgrade my gun. the longest shot I'd prob try to take would be 300 yards I was exaggerating on the distance I didn't measure it.
