Hey, i need some help deciding on which cartridge to use for the remington model 700 varmint stainless fluted rifle that im looking to purchase, the rifle is a 26" heave barrel with a 1;12 twist rate dont get it mixed up with the newer more expensive vssf model, i am seriously curious about the .204 ruger cartridge but like the price of the .223 ammunition, most of my shooting will be done 100-300 yards occasionally i like to try to reach out there further but we will say 350 max (i do not currently reload) i want to squeeze very tight groups at 100 1/4-1/2" at the most if possible and try to keep them as tight as possible at further ranges which cartridge do yall think will work oh yeah and i almost forgot i do some varmint hunting and when i hit i want the most ballistics as possible

You might want to go to the Introductions section and tell us a little about yourself. You might get more responses.
If you are thinking of the .223 or .204 Ruger, you will want to go with a tighter twist rate, such as a 7 in one up to a 9 in one twist rate to stabilize the heavier bullets. The 1 in 12 would be ok for only the lightest of bullets in those calibers.

the only problem is that i only have the money for a rem 700 with the 1:12 twist rate what would the consequence be if i fired the 40 and higher pills out of the 1;12

You SHOULD be able to shoot up to 55gr max bullets (.223) out of a 1-12. I say should because all rifles are different. The ammo cost for a .223 is going to be a LOT cheaper than a .204. Since you don't reload YET that would be a consideration. Or you could save your pennies and get the more expensive model.

well this will be an all around rifle im not quite sure if it would be humane to chunk suck a small round at a deer, and im unsure about the laws on the .204 but i would consider it for one reason i dont hunt for trophy or a rack so i dont shoot for chests im more of an ear or eye guy drop them where they stand still i would be very reluctant to use it on large game, in all honesty i have a major beaver problem at the lake at my house they seem to like to burrow in the dam that keeps water from flooding a neighborhood

also it would be a range gun accuracy is a must thats why im going with the base model for a m40a1 ,3 ,5, also seldom coyote and fox hunter

As availability & affordability reign supreme above most rifle cartriges. Imho it
is too small for most of the game I hunt, but the flat shooting performance of
the .223 even works great when used with a Thompson/Contender pistol! It
can be a great deer round with the right bullet @ long range...but in close you
might have the same problem I did with a 150gr .308 bullet that passed thru
a deer w/o expanding. The deer "did not know it was dead yet", & attacked
me until it was about 25 feet away was put-down by a head shot!

I personally with go with 223 since you aren't reloading. The 223 will do everything the 204 will do and then some. The 204 might be faster and a little flatter but in the ranges you're talking about you won't see it.
