I'm hoping my Porter knife will be in next week! He hasn't gotten the money order yet

OP, I've been a bit of a small time collector, keeping a very small collection of quality knives. I haven't tried every knife out there (haven't even heard of this muela) but I can tell you, Puma, Buck, Old Timer/Schrade, and Case are all excellent makers and well within your price range. Puma, you may have to shop a little though, the only Puma I have cost me over $200. But they have many models.

I always wanted a Gerber 400S but they are pretty pricey these days.

Tough times yrs ago, I made my deer knife from an old Jap stainless blank a guy gave me, and it holds an edge really well. Going on 27 yrs using that thing, it's done all my deer (but one) and a bunch of deer my hunting buds have shot.

I couldn't find my sharpener once, with a doe on the deck, so used my Benchmade 530. Worked fine. I always take 2 knives, just in case I lose one or forget to sharpen one after a few uses.

Most newcomers show up with too big of a knife.

I like the Knives of Alaska "Cub Bear" as a general purpose hunting knife. Not too big but can get the job done. Something like this is too big, The Hunter,:

I have been using a Buck 119 for close to 30 years and have no complaints. I also like the old Marble brand knives that were once made in the U.S.A. you can still buy them but they may be foriegn made.
