Default Japanese Hunters Kill Radioactive Hogs

The area around the Japanese city of Fukushima, where the nuclear power accident happened, is over run with wild hogs. Authorities are considering allowing some evacuees to return home. There is one big problem; radioactive hogs, lots of them.

Wild boar meat is a delicacy in northern Japan, but animals slaughtered since the disaster are too contaminated to eat. According to tests conducted by the Japanese government, some of the boars have shown levels of radioactive element caesium-137 that are 300 times higher than safety standards.

"Authorities in the town of Tomioka say they’ve killed 800 so far, but officials there say that’s not enough, according to Japanese media. The latest statistics show that in the three years since 2011, the number of boars killed in hunts has grown to 13,000 from 3,000.

As a person that knows nothing about " levels of radioactive element caesium-137", at first guess I would think it would make the hogs sterile. Either that or change them into Hogzilla.

Just walking on the edge of of my grave.

Amount of radiation to produce sterility is about 2 times a fatal level.

Animal's life span is shortened, but pigs are fertile at about 9 months of age. Feral hogs have an upper life span of about 8 years- even with radiation poisoning cutting that in half, they can have about 4-5 litters.
What we have here is... failure- to communicate.

I heard this about the thrifty Soviets.

After Chernobyl, they decided that spreading out the radiation among the populace was better than letting the beef go to waste. So the shipped the radioactive beef they had to kill to different communites. A cow at a time.

Heard this from an iron curtain refuge that I use to work with. The communist always had shortages in the stores, so when the beef came it it was quickly gone.

Barbecue anyone?

lol... Better add a Geiger counter to the hunting bag. Forget a thermal scope...
