Default Hog hunting..(.308 or 5.56)?

I'm going to go hog hunting for the first time..

As far as rifles go, I only have a .308 and a 5.56

I'm accurate with both and dot mid carrying either, so I simply want recommendations on which caliber and why...

.308 (150 grain)
5.56 (75 grain)

Thanks

....(that's kind of what I'm asking)

I'll be taking pigs under 200lbs.

I'd probably take something in 5.56/.223. The pigs aren't that large from the sounds of it and I can't see shots being over a long distance since most hunts I've heard of happen at night. If it does happen that you're going during the day, I'd opt for the .308 due to less of a range restriction.....unless you're in thick bush?

It's the advertisement for the .308 Springfield M1.

Feral hogs are extremely tough. They have a layer of gristle protecting their torso. .223/5.56 may penetrate it with proper load, but .308/7.62 is expected.

.223 is too light. A lot of pigs have been shot with the .223 but your better off with a .308 as it's got more knockdown power out to 300+yds if your good enough. Use a good 150gn projectile and you'll have no problems.

Use a .223 and wound a boar and your in for a very interesting day trying to chase it down and finish it off. A wounded pig is something not to be messed around with.

Either one would be fine. Both are capable. Remington and Winchester make hog hunting ammunition in both 308 and 223. You can hit them from a bit farther out with the 308 but the 223 is good inside 125yrds or so with a good bullet. Why not take both. I do it all the time.

I'd take the 308.

I'm not a hunter, but I don't think I'd like to be within 125yds of a pissed off 200 lb. wild boar with a "flesh wound".
