getting my first gun
Im in south mississippi ( picayune) and plan on buying a rifle. I figure most of what i will do hunt deer and practice.
I want a bolt action rifle, likely a .308 cal. I am not sure, however, so is that a good caliber? Also what would be a good option forvthe gun?
Regards,
Gene Saika

You can't go wrong with a bolt action .308. Just match it to your physical stature. Remington model 7's are nice, and Ruger makes a small light version too, can't think of the model designation right now, but I LIKE Rugers. Have trusted my life to them several times in the past, will do so several more times I'm sure. My bear rifle is a Ruger M 77 Mk II .338 and I intend to use it for the rest of my life.

While looking recently...I considered .270 and .308.
You might find my poll and the discussion in it useful.
http://www.firearmstalk.com/forums/f50/deer-rifle-270-vs-308-a-25394/
Due to budget, the rifles I considered are:
Howa 1500
Weatherby Vanguard
Remington 700 SPS
Winchester 10FP
Other that was mentioned later on that I should have considered is Marlin XL-7
In the end, I went with a .308 Weatherby Vanguard (for what it's worth)

Don't overlook the offerings from Savage Arms.
If you're more interested in accuracy over looks, money in your pocket over bragging rights, a Savage may be for you.

Savage or Marlin 308
are both fine rifles, and what you save on the rifle you can get some good optics.

Imo
If I only had one rifle, lived in the south and I did not plan to hunt anywhere else I would look hard at the Savage in 30-06 due to off the shelf wide bullet weight in ammo as well and put more money in a higher end scope. If I planned to hunt other areas especially areas like AK I would go with the Ruger M77/Hawkeye 338WM for vesatility.

Didn't MS just open hunting with a 45-70 during black powder season? That would also work during center-fire season. Just my $.02.
