First Hunting Rifle & Optics Recommendation
I know everybody has different opinions on what the best all-around hunting rifle and caliber would be and i eagerly await your comments. I already own Mini-14 in 223 and a Bushy AR-15 in 223 and a 1022 rifle. I know i need something better suited for a general all purpose, larger game hunting rifle. Game will be Mule Deer, Elk, Coyote to name a few. We have mountain lions and bears up here as well.

Thanks in advance,

30-06 all the way for caliber it will easily handle the game you mentioned, and the range is good (if you are) and ammo is cheapish and easy to find. If you dont mind my asking whats your budget for this gun?

Don't have a real budget - i will spend what i need to in order to get what i need.

Then i would recomend. Mossberg 100, remington 700, ruger m77, savage axis, and im not sure about the model but i think its a marlin x7 would all be wonderfull guns and reasonably priced. Put a leopuld or nikon on any of them you should be good to go. I still say 30-06 is your best bet for caliber

Get a Savage in .30-06, best bang for the buck...................

my vote would be for a rifle in 30-06 also. wide variety of ammo selection and with it being one of the most commonly available calibers, ammo is decently priced. wide variety of rifles chambered in that caliber too, bolt action, slide action, semi-auto, ect....loaded with the proper ammo there is almost nothing that can't be taken in North America with the 30-06.

Ruger, Marlin, Savage, Remington, Weatherby, Sako, Winchester, Tikka, CZ, ect., ect.,... many brands to choose from in many different price ranges. find one that fits you well and is to your liking and you are good to go. get a good scope and then go and enjoy it.

I say get a Savage 10/110 a leupold/nikon or similar and a better aftermarket stock for the savage

Also vote 30-06, my favorite hunting round.

My vote goes to the following, in no particular order:

7mm Remington Magnum
.270 WSM
.300 Win Mag

You will notice that everything I selected is in a flat shooting caliber. The 30-06 is good but I think for CO these other calibers are better.

You set the bar with Elk. For that, you will need .30-06. Ammo is everywhere.

Lots of brand names were mentioned here, but here is what I do. I find a dealer that is close by that I like, one that knows his stuff, and has connections with other dealers such as gunsmiths. The best brand in the world means nothing unless you have a dealer that stands behind the product and the warranty. If you need anything, warranty or upgrades, you should be able to get it there. I have a Remington 700, it is a fine rifle, some of the others are also, but without a good local dealer, its a pain in the azz if you have to drive to Denver or Salida, or Grand Junction to find someone to help you out. Go make friends. You will discover the answer to your question.
