I have traditionally always thought that the 30-30 or the 30-06 was the best gun to use for deer hunting however; I have recently tried an AK variant of some sort at a shooting range and was wondering if this would be better for deer hunting (because if you miss or hit wrong you are already reloaded)?

Better depends on your point of view. Yes, the 7.62x39 as a round is quite capable at killing deer sized game. While I may not choose the AK as the platform to do that, I am sure that it has been.
As for a semi auto, lever, slide, or bolt actions, that is also a personal preference. You can be very fast with either one of them. Besides, you only need one shot, right?
I killed my first deer with an AK-47. Like stated above it is very capable of doing the job. I now use an AR-15 which many people say souldn't be used for deer.
The AK`s and the SKS`s are just no way near as accurate as a good bolt gun. I helped a friend build up and SKS for deer hunting. I was quick to point out that he would be lucky to hold a 4 in. group at 100 yrds. He siad that`s ok because where he hunts you couldn`t see a deer at 100 yrds. I guess alot depends on how and where you hunt.
I and my son have shot deer with my SKS. One shot, one kill. That said, it's no way near as accurate as a bolt or my Rem. pump. Close range, good enough though!

I set up a new in the box Remington mdl 7400 right when the new mdl 750 came out. I found a great deal on line for one and put a Mueller 3X9X40 red dot scope with 1/8 min clicks on it. I had a trigger job done on it and it shoots pretty well. I have not hunted anything with it yet, but might take it to the Adirondacks this fall for a weekend or two if I can find the time.
It likes the Remington 180 grain round nose core lokts. Dan
I wish they'd let us hunt with a high powered rifle in indiana. i got an sks that would do it and the ammo is cheaper than 30-30, it's only $4 per box of 20.
