Gosh, what a question! there are literally hundreds of calibers that are good. I would suggest something like the 243 win, 270 win, 308 win or 30-06. That way you can find cheap ammo everywhere, and depending on what type of action you like, you can have a single shot, lever, pump, auto or bolt gun. Stay away from the magnums for deer, don't need that unless hunting really long range, and ammo expensive. Put the bullet in the right place and a 243 will kill a deer just as dead as a 300 Win mag.

In my woods where shots are under 100yds. I use a .50 cal. CVA Frontier rifle, a .308 FR-8 Mauser, 30-30 Win. 94 or Marlin336, and I want to someday try my Marlin 512 Slugmaster - although that might be overkill!

Default best deer gun

The best deer gun iv'e found is my New England, Pardner Tracker 2. It's a single shot but it has a 1/4 thick bull barrel and scope. The gun weighs right at 16 pounds. It's heavy as hell but it's very accurate, i usually use the Remington CopperSolid hollow point slugs. My father in law used it one day and killed a deer at almost 200 yards, pretty good for a shotgun. I'd rather use a high powered rifle bug indiana law says we can't use them to kill deer.

Default ya

I use 270 win. Doesn't completely massacre what your hunting. Also
308's will also get the job done too. Just depends on what your hunting.

Ha. Great discussion piece. A .270 is all ya need. A 30 30 is fine at short range. and a 30.06 is like throwing nuclear hand grenades. You don't want to eat your meat through a straw, do you?

This depens on where you are hunting, how big the deer are that you are hunting how much recoil you can stand how much weight can you pack and how far you have to hike to your stand.

You can't go wrong with a 25-06, 257 roberts, 6.5x55mm, 264 win mag, 270 win, 7x57mm, 260 rem, 30-30, 30-06, 308, 7mm-08, 300 wsm, 25wssm, 7mm mag, 44 mag, 41 mag, 284 win, 7mm stw, 300 rum, 338 rum.

There are just so many cartridges out there to choose from it is mind boggling.

You can't go wrong with the 102 year old 30-06 you can find ammo anywhere in the USA Canada and Alaska in any podunk town or big city never worry about not having ammo.

The best deer gun is the one that brings home the venison!
