backup hog gun
 

I am relatively new to this forium.I have been reloading for 25 years, but I just started using swcs. Is the 45 apc with 240grain or higher swc enough to stop a hog as a backup gun?

The word backup gun conjures up mental pics of nasty, up close, frienzied, put it down or get tusked shooting. Personally I'd rather have a heavy hardcast SWC fired from a .41mag/.44mag/.45colt+P/.454. It's debatable whether the .45acp would penetrate enough to instantly drop it unless perfectly placed. When being charged it's dang hard to perfectly place bullets-unlike hunting. It would suck to place the bullet perfectly during a charge and it not penetrate enough.

stalkingbear, thanks for the info-I was just wondering-I ave a rehawk,83/8 bbl and a scoped 460, both are a bit hard to carry with their bulk,so thanks for the info.

Would I stake my life on it..No! The lightest auto I would use is a 10mm auto. A 200gr would be best on paper, but I have found some excellent 180gr cast that penetrate better. The .45 is a great round, but even w/ 230gr Flat point they just don't penetrate enough.

I use to use my Colt 1991 as a back up when i started hog hunting but that is because it was the highest caliber handgun i had at the time. But now that ive "Come into" quite a few more "Tools" I personally wouldnt take anything less then a 10mm, or .357 mag, ideally a .44 Red hawk...

Back-up hunting guns make me think revolver, preferably a reasonably short barreled one.

The last thing I want to do is shove an autoloader muzzle into a hog's chest or a bear's neck and have it de-lock the barrel.
