It is legal to hunt with .22 caliber centerfire ammo in Wisconsin for whitetails.

But I was pretty sure .22's were illegal for deer.

I have 3 different rifles chambered in 7.62x54r. A Sako M39, a Tula SVT-40 and a VKT Tikka barreled M91. All of which I take hunting. All of which are very accurate for hunting purposes.

I have a Mosin Nagant. I went through the trouble of sighting it in with 203 gr Brown Bear ammo. It will take a deer humanely. We were just using mildots to estimate the range. I was blowing stumps out of the water at 600 yards. I have yet to shoot a deer with it but that might change today. One of the scope rings is broken on my shotgun. The Mosin will be weapon #1 if I see a deer today.

Deer hunting laws vary from state to state. Here, hunting deer with a .22 will get you in trouble. It might even get your gun, and truck confiscated along with you getting a hefty fine. Hunting deer with FMJ ammo, anywhere, would be unethical, if not illegal. Unless you took out a vital organ, the 54R could just pass through the deer, leaving it to slowly bleed to death, and leaving you with a story about the one that got away.
Pay the $18.00 for a box of proper ammo to hunt with. Practice and plink with the surplus.

Another thing about FMJ ammo is if you make a perfect shot you won't get much of a blood trail. Spend the money on soft point ammo. You will not regret it.
