6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel?

Not sure which category this needs to be under but I'm looking for a new hunting rifle out to 600 yards in an AR platform and can fit in my standard AR lower. I figured these would be the better choices of what can fit down there for that range. I'll be hunting deer, hog, coyote, almost anything down here in Oklahoma and Texas really. What are the pros and cons of each? I've seen the ballistics chart by Alexander Arms comparing the two but I'd prefer real world experience from y'all. Also how easy is it to find Grendel ammo? I haven't seen any in stores (not that I've really looked)

From what I read 6.5 would be better at the longer ranges.

I stopped at Midwestern Shooters Supply in Lomira, WI today, they had 2 choices of 6.8 on the shelf. Zero choices of 6.5 on the shelf.

If there had been some Hornady 6.8 SST's on the shelf, I would have bought some.

Hornady, Remington and Silver State Armory are the three most common brands of 6.8 ammo.

Also saw a couple of .300 BLK choices on the shelf, one standard velocity and one subsonic.

For 6.5, better plan on rolling your own.

Ford or Chevy
I own the 6.8 SPCII and I wouldnt trade it for anything. The 6.5 has a higher BC but its not that big a differance. The 6.5 works better in longer barrels and the 6.8 was designed for a 16" barrel. Both are accurate. I think ammo for the 6.8 is easyer to find. The Hornady 120 gr SST is a great hunting rd. SSA has some premium ammo. I use the SSA 85 gr barnes tsx for most of my hog hunting. A lot of guys like the 95 gr barnes ttsx. The 85 gr barnes does 3050 fps out of my 16" ARP barrel and it will shoot sub moa.

Are there heavier bullets available for the 6.8? I reload and will be making my own after I get about 200 casings. It won't be a regular range toy (that's the 5.56) but I'd like to take it out every now and then

There are some that are reloading some 130's and even a 140 from VLD or something like that. The problem is they start getting to long for the AR

I would like to stay around 120 or so I would think. Would that be fine for deer? I hunt from southern Kansas to northern Texas

I love the 6.5, but for me it has to be the 6.5x55................

Joint the 6.8 forum. There is lots of good info.

I think I'm gonna go with the 6.8 because of ammo availability and the ballistics are very similar to about my max yardage. Now to decide on a brand of upper
