Default45-70 lever

Howdy, new here. Had a question. Has anybody shot or hunted with a Marlin 45-70 lever gun? I have a 30-06 w/ scope for hunts with long distances involved. But I have a place where I hunt deer, elk, and black bear in thick brushy forest + I do a lot of walking. I was looking for a light, fast, iron-sights, gun I could hunt with that I could shoot accurately from a standing postion. It sounds like the 45-70 would do that, but does it have a ton of recoil? It won't help me if I can't shoot quick and accurate with it. Thanks for any thoughts.

I have one. It's a really usefull rifle too. I've only taken one deer with it. I use handloaded 350 gr. hornady flatnose bullets in mine over 46 grs. of rl-7 powder. The recoil isn't too bad with this load. However if you up the powder charge recoil goes up. It's a killer on game.

I have a Guide Gun with ghost ring sight. Really fast and accurate. Handloaded with 340gr Flat nose cast (linotype) at 2100fps. At that power level it kicks like a 12ga with slugs. It will drop a 400 pound hog in his tracks

Default45-70

Yeah, I was looking at a Marlin 30-30 for the brush gun, and thought...just what if I happen to run into an elk. Then I dropped by a gunsmith shop and he just happened to have a really, really pretty Marlin 1895 45-70 on sale used. I'm really tempted.

I don't hunt anymore. But I have a Marlin 1895 SS that's a great rifle. I rebuilt it and refinished the stock. In the process I bought and installed a new recoil pad as well.

If you're concerned about recoil, get a Kickeez Sorbothane recoil pad. The model for the Marlin is a touch too small for the 1895, but the model for the Savage fits perfectly. Trust me, it just sucks up recoil.

I bought it from NoKick.com. Brian, the owner is a good guy and a vet. Customer service is top notch. Here's a link:

DefaultMarlin 1895 SS

I have and still use a 45/70 Marlin 1895SS with a 405 Rem flatnose bullet and my reload behind it that is a little compressed and very potent(can't be recoil shy on this one). It is a great brush gun for deer and the like. They are a blast to shoot in my opinion. Go for it>>>>>>>>>>>
