I once made the most horrible shot on a deer, right through the guts(luckily missing the poopoo pipe)but anyway, because of my caliber choice(.444marlin)the deer went right down and expired in about 45 seconds,if I had been using a .40S&W,I highly doubt I would have ever found it let alone brought it down,on the other hand,my father in law who is an expert hunter used to always use a .22-250 for deer and did nothing but drop them every time,he would never take a shot with that particular rifle unless he had a neckshot.

This one?

Problem is it is heavy. I prefer a Model 19 .357 6" tube, using 158gr SP and 296.

Never use hollow points. Soft points pentrate. Longest shot I've taken w/ the .357 is 35 yards. Through and through. Lungs, heart were jelly. I use a M1892 in .44-40 w/ 205gr SP. Rifle has a 24" tube. Great for 50 yard shots. The rifle will shoot 100 yards, but I like a sure thing. My buddy has a .45colt carbine, accurate, but not even close as far as accuracy. Mine is an EMF Hartford Hex barrel. Great fun, cheap to reload, very accurate.

Was hunting with a friend of mine for hog in CA. He had a bad shot, using a Remington R700 in .308, on one and it turned and charged. Je pulled his XD .40 and put three more in it before it dropped. It weighed in at 210 lbs.

So I reckon you might be out of luck with using it as a primary weapon.

Ok so I see most of the post's saying you need a .357 or larger handgun to hunt medium size game, how man hunt for trophy's and how many hunt for food? I personally do not hunt trophy's I hunt for food and a .40 is pleanty enough for a shot between the eyes at ranges up to 40 yards, I will admit anything farther than that with this caliber is sketchy at best I have taken many deer at 35-40 yards 1 shot between the eyes with .40 180gr jhp's but that is me and I am not saying you should use this caliber for hunting medium game.

I wouldn't hunt hogs with a .40 or any animal for that matter.
If your looking for a cheap hog gun id buy a cheap 12gauge an choot em with a slugs.
Using that .40 will only put you in danger I promise you that.
If you insisnt on using and going out there with it I would use FMJ atleast to get penitration, but like I said ve prepared for something to go wrong.

That's why I'm about to buy a 10mm conversion for my 45 I personally don't care for a 40 too weak and to snappy if I want snap I want some power behind it.

You guys realize this thread is almost a year and a half old!!!
CJ84, be careful w/ 10mm in a standard 1911 frame. The barrel bushings will crack about ever 1000 rounds. Mine is a purpose built 10mm Gov't 1911. The frame is about 8oz heavier then a standard .45acp 1911. The barrel bushing is good for about 2000 rounds. There is alot of stress going from sub sonic to super sonic. The 1911 frame is not designed for it. I'd rather get a .460 Rowland kit. That is if your firearm meets the specs from Clarks.
