My dog is bigger than that buck. And hes not even a big dog.
FMJs arent legal to hunt big game here, and I wouldnt use it even if it was. Also, I doubt I'd push a .223 quite that far and expect a clean kill. Im callin lots of luck on that one.

He shot the deer with a FMJ round at a distance that would leave a 223 with around 500 ft lb of energy. Yet the wound channel is larger than a 12 ga slug at 40 yards that would have over 2,000 ft lb of energy.

OP. D@mn good shot. Little bit of luck, and a whole lot of skill involved in that one.

Living up here in western NY the first thing I looked for was spots, but having lived and hunted in NC I know how small most southern deer are. There is a reason that NC gives you 5 tags a season, that's all I have to say on that.

If it was me, in my neck of the woods, (we only get one buck tag a year, up to 2 doe tags, and 2 bow\ML if we get the premium licence) I would have passed him up. I don't worry about the antlers other than they are there until I have it on the ground myself. I am strictly out there for the meat. That being said, that's a nice little deer.

I can not say for sure which is true, but my own personal experience shows that that this generalization is largely accurate. Deer are larger in the north than the south...along with many other animals. Bass and snakes are larger in the south than the north.
When we could run dogs in this area to control the deer population the deer were just as big as up north. Now we have 50 deer to the square mile. Deer are very small now. We have a lot of white and piebald deer. There is only one way to have a lot of white deer, inbreeding.
