.338 is a little much. You can do it if you want though. Personally, it's not something I would want to do.

i shoot a 458 winmag a lot and used to have a 338 winmag. i find it an incredibly unpleasent round to shoot. i liken it to getting slapped by dolph lundgren as opposed to being pushed by sylvester stallone when compairing the two.

the recoil of a 338 is very fast and sharp. i just dont care for the recoil impulse of the 30magnums.

i would suggest trying to beg or borrow a shot or two out of one before you buy if you have never shot some sort of mid 30's magnum

oh and i use 458 winmag on whitetail from time to time. this year i have to sideline my model 70 express due to the leupold vx7 self destructing and the glass delaminating

A good friend that I hunt with every year uses a 338 for mule deer and elk. His shots are usually quite accurate so excessive damage is not an issue and he dosen't spend a lot of time tracking. He has taken some nice big bucks with that monster and we can often tell when he shoots, sounds like a Howitzer.

The .338 is very popular in the Mtn. west. The caliber is very accurate over open space. It kills without masssive meat damage if you use the 250 gr. bullets. I have no idea what over kills means, is that a PITA term? The .338 loaded with light bullets is a poor choice. It is like any seriouse hunting rifle if you are concerned about recoil get a 30-30 with a big rubber butt pad.

With the cost of .338 ammo I personally would just go .308 no need for a 1000 yard rifle if your only shooting up to 100-600 yards. That is just my opinion so take that for what it is

Before anything I would check state law. Some states limit you on calibers you can use for certain types of game. I believe here in AL the biggest we can use is .300 win mag and .7mm.

My dad hunts with a .300 wsm. He is really considering on dropping to .270 or .30-06. Last year he shot a buck at 20 yards. There was literally nothing left of the front shoulders.

In the eastern states like Alabama they limit the upper end rifles? Too bad.
That sounds like another useless control over gun owners.

That's about the only crap gun law here. Doesn't realy bother me tho. I would not hunt with a caliber that big anyway. Unless I was hunting something much bigger that whitetail. Speaking of AL gun laws. I was talking to a friend of mine who is a LEO. Apparently AL is an open carry state. And you only need a permit for CC. I did my research before getting my CC and never ran across that one.
