Default .338 for deer hunting

Just wondering what people know about the 338 round and if it's suitable for deer hunting. Also if anyone knows what the average price of a browning BAR in .338 would be guns in great shape and has brand leupold vx3 scope just can't decide If that's what I want to hunt with. Have a 308 now and love that gun just wanting something new.

Do you really want to have to tote that carcass that far?

Let me guess, it would be good for bears though.

Sorry, i was joking about the extended range. I wouldn't want to walk as far as you could hit a deer with it to drag a deer out.

I shot quite a few deer, antelope, elk and coyotes with a 338 win mag mainly using 250 grain Nosler Partions. Aim true and they fall dead. Nothing magic about it. Great elk cartridge.

I agree with 30-30 but the 338 will damage a lot of meat on a deer.

A 338 will certainly kill a deer, but I can't imagine why you'd want to put up with the recoil when there are so many cartridges that would work just as well and kick a LOT less.

If you insist on using a 338, avoid the premium bullets that you'd normally use on elk and try something that will expand properly on a deer.

So will any centerfire rifle caliber. Hit 'em in the pie plate and you only wreck the vital organs.

Why do you feel it necessary to list your guns?

As the saying goes, 'dead is dead' but a 338 is a bit of an over kill for deer. But it will not damage any more meat than a 30-30. I have killed several bo with a 338 and it did a fine job and the wound cavity was smaller than my 7 RM.

But because I was in bear country (Alaska) I used the 338.
