308 Winchester
I recently traded for a Remington model 660 chambered in 308 winchester. This is the first 308 that I have ever owned, so I am not really familiar with the performance of this caliber. I mainly hunt whitetail deer in big timber with the majority of my shots being at 150 yards or less. Will this be a good rifle-caliber for the type of hunting I do? I have used mostly 30-06 and 280 remingtons for the last 20 years. Thank you for your advice, I greatly appreciate it.

Excellent rifle, excellent caliber. Very light rifle- I think you will want a recoil pad. I THINK there was a safety recall on those- some would fire when safety was released- DO check w/ Remington- if there is an open recall on yours, they will send you a prepaid shipping label and fix it- no charge.

its a great deer round especially with 150-180grain softpoints whichever your rifle likes best. its pretty much identical in performance to a 30-06 in that bullet weight range

Just know that the difference between yout -06 and your 308 is small enought that you should never notice. fps difference can be as small as 50fps between thiose to rounds.
Now the remington 660!!! Nice 1968 to 1971 rifle. Those rifle sell for stupid prices if you can find one around here. $ 600 +. Same action used on the XP-100 handguns also.

The .308 was suggested to me by a friend who was a Marine Sniper. He said it will be very accurate up to 500 yards with ease. I don't ever see myself shooting much past 100, maybe 150 yards but it is nice to know I have the right gun to do so if I choose.
