The facts are the .280 Remington or 7MM Remington Express is a far better round. It is in fact a 7MM .06. The .280 runs on a very wide selection of excellent .284 bullets. It is a much more reliable cartridge on big game.
The .280 was loaded to lower pressures. A handloader can turn this into a very fine round.

My first center fire rifle was a Savage 110 CL in 270win. Had a 4X Leupold on it. It has killed cleanly over 100 head of big game from Alaska moose and barren ground caribou to whitetail, blacktail, and mule deer. Forget just how many black bear its taken but I'm sure its over 10 plus unknown hogs. Last thing I killed with it was a 6X6 Roosevelts elk. With a load of 4831 and 150gr Nosler partitions it kills cleanly and far away although the longest shot I've ever taken was not over 250yards I would have shot to 350 if necessary. I'm an old Jack Oconnor fan and he was sure right about the 270!!!! That Savage is probably the plainest looking rifle I own but the critters couldn't care less. Liberty2

the 270 Win. is just one of many calibers i have chosen own and to try and have a rifle chambered in that caliber at all times.

why a 270? well it doesn't stay one of the more popular selling rifle chamberings and ammo sells unless it worked as well as it does. it sells as well as it does, because it works as well as it did many years ago.

proper shot placement and proper ammo, it can take most game in North America. it has excellent ballistics and great energy to take game at reasonable distances.

the only disadvantage to the 270 is in some rifles, it can be a bit of a shoulder thumper. recoil can be brisk with some loads in lighter rifles.

I got to shoot one round out it was starting to sleet and my wife has got the flu but I just had to shoot it even if it was just one shot it was killing me. I just had made new steel targets at work so I had two itches to scratch. To hear boom then to hear gong as the bullet knocks off that fresh paint job.

as much as i like the 270 Winchester, i like my 280 Remington better. ballistics are about in between the 270 and the 7mm Mag.

the 270 just got better press and the endorsement from Jack O'Connor. plus they didn't bring the cartridge out in a rifle that allow it to reach it's potential in the beginning.

if i didn't have both, and had to make a choice between the two, i would probably have to choose the 280 over the 270, simply based on the ballistics.

My dad hunted with .270 and hence introduced me to the caliber. I have taken mule deer, elk, a mountain goat, and a Rocky Mountain sheep with .270. I did use my .338 for my Idaho moose hunt, and my Alaskan moose hunt. Although with the lower 48 moose, my .270 would have been fine. I have a .30-06. I dunno why. I never use it.
