You just have to make sure the half that is gone is the head. When I was seven I took pride in shooting small game in the head with a pellet rifle. Now I am long in the tooth. I still take pride in shooting small game in the head. I don't hunt with a pellet gun any longer and there is no difference in accuracy. I am a very opportunistic hunter. When I see a rabbit I shoot him in the head, regardless of the weapon.

Right on. I have a Savage 110C that I got new for my 16th birthday many years ago. It shot a lot of game and varmints as a .270 and was rebarreled as a tack-driving .25-06. I still have it and like it a lot. Savage makes the best plain rifles on the planet and most will shoot a lot better than their owners.

You have a lot of enjoyable time ahead, getting to know your new rifle and then using it.

I also have grandkids that like to practice skinning and cleaning skills before they get on a big animal! As beginners, the less goo and gore and more intacked the skin is the better experience.
Besides the 06 round is more expensive than the .22LR

I think it is the best all around cartridge there is! I have used one for 50 years
and have always been a Jack O'Connor fan. It is more than adequate for
anything in the lower 48 and is very easy to load for. A lot of great projectiles
available for it... and with powders like 4831, 4064...etc...no problem.

I have the 111 Savage in 270 with the Nikon prostaff scope. Great rifle. Very accurate. When the ammo shelves were nearly empty, I always found a couple boxes of 270.

The only thing I don't like is the eye relief and with the two piece scope base there is no adjustment, but a new base can fix that if I can find one that is not as expensive as a new scope with a longer eye relief.

I got a Winchester model 70 270 Win rifle in 1952, started reloading ammo for it in 1953. I grew up out in the country and shot unwonted critters with 100 and 110 grain bullets and loaded 130 Gr bullets for killing my first pronghorn, mule deer and elk. I did end up using a 340 Weatherby for elk because I wonted to shoot at longer ranges than I had shot with the 270.
