Hornady V-max bullets are polymer tipped. They are especially for varmints. They are made with very thin jackets so that when they hit something they blow apart. That was a one shot kill at exactly 75 yards. A buddy of mine shot a ground hog at 100 yards with a 270 weatherby mag running 100 gr HP varmint bullets and it blew up like he threw himself on a land mine.

The original questoin is sort of like asking "will a coupe" be OK for a road rally?"

There are so many makes and variations on an AR-15 it would be impossible to answer with sufficient detail. The general answer is easy though - "it can be." Depends on how you have it set up and exactly what vermin you are after.

You need to take it to the range with the ammo you wish to use (or several candidates to test). It may vary with the mission but about the least performance I would accept personally from a varmint rifle is 1 MOA (Minute of Angle or 1.05" at 100 yards) for a 5-shot group. There are certainly ARs that will do that or much better. It usually takes a bit more optic than a red dot though.

OTOH, if you are controlling the coons, woodchucks and 'possums that are raiding the backyard garden and the range is less than 50 yards, almost anything will do.

Good luck!!!!

Default AR 15's ?

What kind of AR15 did you buy one of thoes fancy ones with a custom made target barrel, or just a straight out of the box AR 15? just curious I have a original Colt civilian model without the foward assist on it, that I bought new around mid 1970's & it is great on yotes, chucks, or any thing else in that size. I handload my 223 ammo with V- max or Norsler BT either one does a great job on game, so on Squirrls I would only try head shots other wise there will be no meat left for the pot.
