In north idaho where i come from the cougars are pretty big and its common to tree them with hounds and shoot them out of the tree with a 22 magnum handgun. Cats have thin skin and bones there fur is thin and they dont have thick layers of fat or near the muscle mass of a bear . Unlike a bear they are actualy pretty easy to kill. The hardest part is finding them to get in your sights. They are extremely elusive and mostly nocturnal. They are light on there feet and hard to track on hard ground unlike a deer elk moose or bear. They also like to sleep and attack from high points and tracking will usualy will just leave you frustrated because they will sit and watch you all day.Idaho does not allow rim fires for any big game. But since cougars are so easy to kill and 22 mags have been commonly used for so many years on them they are allowed for cats.
Although I dont condone poaching the 22 magnum in rifle form is the caliber of choice for poaching deer. They do not echoe through the canyons like a high power rifle does and are very effective on a deer at close range.

Very good post. I have been Booed and laughed at for telling these guys about using the .22 Mag on cats. You will note many of these experts claim you need a .454 Casull to kill a cat. What a damn mess the hide would be.
