I trust everyone had a great holiday season and didn't play up too much on New Years :D

On new years day my brothers and I went for a shot on my uncle's property and we were met with success. We drove around for the afternoon spotting and stalking roos and got 6 or 8.. We also got to see a couple of deer, and I only just missed out on taking a shot on a massive fallow buck which spooked after some roos that I'd accidently jumped hoppped straight past it. After it got dark however, we hooked up the spotlight and had a look around the places that we had already been. Roos were everywhere! We shot another 30or so before we came across a few deer running back and forth in a stand of trees. My brother Ryan lined one up with the .223 and let fly and the deer dropped emphatically, hit right through both shoulders. We ran up and slit it's throat, bleeding it so the blood didn't spoil the backstraps (for us) and hind legs (for the dogs).

(Sorry about the little pic, it's only off a phone.. Just click on it)

We also shot a couple of foxes and caught a few rabbits after sending a shot a couple of inches over their heads, which seems to stun them to the point that they'll sit there quietly allowing you to walk straight up to them!

I know that you guys frown on spotlighting but you've got to understand that it's not hunting; it's shooting, in the same way that some of you shoot prairie dogs. We just see it as pest extermination...

All in all it was a great night, and as soon as I'm home again I'll certainly be going out there again! :)

Good catch!

New Mexico you have to submit/pay $9.00 for a tag to hunt in an area/unit and wait to get selected and then you can purchased the license. Very painful! You do not get selected you lose the $9.00 fee.

It is luck of the draw. A better chance of winning the lottery!

Thanks mate, down here if you have access to the land you are welcome to all the game that resides on it.. And when the roos and deer are eating more than their fair share of the feed and wrecking all the fences many of the landowners are happy to allow shooters to thin the herd a little..

Too bad you've got to bend over backwards in order to posess the firearms needed for the hunt. :p

You should try smoking those hind legs(hams). They are great!

You can eat kangaroo but I certainly wouldn't.. Their meat tastes and smells extremely gamey, especially the bucks (males). I suppose that maybe a younger doe might be better and that's probably what the majority of commercial roo meat sales consist of. Like you said though, I just consider them varmints..

But they are so cute... (Glass made me say this)...

Good job!

I dont frown on spot lighting. I think its wrong only when its done illegally.

Yeah the little ones are but we don't shoot them. I won't even shoot a female if I think it's joey won't be able to survive on it's own...

I reckon fox cubs are pretty cute too lol..
