Default Shot SSR at IDPA this morning.

We had a great turn out. It was 49 at last count. Then I think a few more showed up. We usually have 37-40 people. I had trouble finding a place to park. We had about 10-15 first time competitors. And there were quite a few ladies there.

I decided I wanted to use my S&W 629 a while back. But this is the first time I got to use it to compete. I really enjoyed it. My times weren't too shabby either. I did neglect to shoot a target all together. That destroyed my score. But I can't blame the gun. That was just me not shooting a target. I knew that I was going to do a tactical reload with one round left in the gun when I got to a knockdown target. I dumped the gun and three rounds hit the ground. I realized then that I had not shot something. But it was too late. Still had a great time. I am going to have a tough time choose which gun to use next time.

Sadly I've been invited to a couple IDPA matches by a computer genius friend of mine and I've never made it. Haven't seen him in a while and I regret not making time.

I saw Russ there too. He is on the forum here. We were talking. Then we started breaking up into squads, and I lost him in the crowd. Not hard to do with 50 shooters. How did you do Russ? Have a good time?

You should just go Mountainman. Go to the IDPA website. It will give you info on local clubs. First time shooters are given a lot of leeway. Don't worry about the rules. Just be safe and have a good time.

If not to compete I'd like to go just to support him. I'll have to swing by his office when I get a chance. Since I'm no running the shop I have more free time.

To me it is not about the competition or trying to win. If it was I would not have used a revolver. It is just a fun time to get together with like minded people and shoot some guns.

That's a great view. I would probably get aggravated and spend months on speeding up my reloads and thousands on improving my shooting. Lol

You would not be the only one doing that. Some of the other people are really good. My first competition was a very humbling experience. I expected to be one of the best. But in reality I am good but no where near the top. I am talking about competitive shooters of course. Bubba usually isn't there. LOL

Well I decided to play the game. I bought some 44 special brass and a new bullet mold. I loaded 200 grain round nose lead bullets on top of 4 grains of Titegroup. They were moving somewhere around 750 - 800 fps. That gave me a power factor of 150-160. Well above the 105 required for SSR. Awesome load in a heavy 44 mag. My gun weighs 41.8 ounces. I felt like I was shooting a 22. My times were much quicker. My reloads were much faster with the round nose bullets instead of the semi-wadcutters. Ejection was much quicker with the shorter brass.

I have not seen the final scores yet. But I am betting I did really well.

Had a great time with a bunch of friends. Russ shot really well too. We had a squad of pretty decent shooters. Nobody shot a hostage. Imagine that!

If there is anyone else here in the Grand Junction area it would be great if you could join us. Just let me know if you are interested.

After seeing how you loaded, I'll bet that 629 shot much flatter. Shooting SSR or ESR in IDPA is all about the reload. Folks who practice the reload are a joy to shoot with. I enjoy competing with my 625 or 686.
