DefaultLooking to get started

Hi, I'm a college student looking for a hobby. My dad hunts, and I've always been good at shooting rifles. I was wondering what the best competition rifle would be to buy for NRA competitions in Kansas. I'd rather use a match rifle than a service rifle, but am looking for the cheapest gun and ammo with the highest quality. Quality over price tag. However, over $1000 for a gun and $.50-$.75 for ammo is too much. I'm not interested in smallbore.
Thanks,
Jack

I see no one's replied to this for more than a month, and this has been your only post, but...

If you don't mind me saying, what you're asking for is out of the constraints you mentioned. If you want a "match rifle", you'll be spending close to that much for a scope, unless you do iron sights, if the rifle you purchase even comes with them. You would be hand loading, which may keep cost of ammunition low, but you will be shooting a LOT. I am currently shooting collegiate smallbore, and I will shoot up to 200 rounds per week. If you want to do some competitive competition, may I ask why you're not interested in smallbore? There is the CMP, Smallbore Light Rifle, etc... all things that you can do on the cheap with an inexpensive rifle and ammunition that will generally cost less than 20 cents a round, expensive glass not necessary...

I feel like I've heard this question asked a million times.

Service Rifle is another classification to consider. You can pick up a good quality M1 Garand from CMP and shoot it in a bunch of matches for short money.

and if you want .50-.75 a round your in the military surplus range. best thing to do is go to match in your area, and talk to the shooters. ask a lot of questions. but competition on the cheap is hard to do. i practice a lot with my rimfire rifles, its cheaper and the fundamentals are the same. and those little bugger are addicting.

Ditto Kal.

I go through Eley Sport like its bottled water. Pretty sad when your budget cant keep up with the amount of 22LR you shoot.
