After watching some videos on youtube, I was curious if they use a standard load .45 acp or something tamer for recoil when they fire so quickly?

Most USPSA (IPSC) shooters reload. There is a minimum power factor floor
of 165 (bullet weight in grains X velocity in FPS divided by 1000) to make
major power factor.

For a 230 gr bullet that translates to a minimum velocity of 717.4 fps.
Adding in a little cushion, I reload 45 ACP to 750 fps for a 230. That is
a bit lighter than the military ball load.

On the other end of the scale, I reload 9mm to major power factor for my
open guns--pushing a 124 gr bullet to 1350 fps. W-A-Y over ANY factory
load in 9x19.

I reload and it makes a world of a difference IMO.

When I shot IPSC / USPSA, I started reloading in the beginning, but went to factory 230gr .45's later. One of the biggest things is to practice at being smooth (not fast). Speed will pick up as you go along.

I was mainly wondering because of muzzle rise.

I currently have a Kimber Ultra Elite 2.75" and a Colt LW Commander 4.25" coming in around 25 and 26 oz respectively. I have not shot a 38 oz full size in quite a while. Perhaps the weight makes a significant advantage in muzzle rise or maybe it is being ported or modified. I can't imagine getting either of mine back on target that fast.

Initially I thought maybe the ammo was weaker but that does not seem like a significant decrease in power.

Technique and practice. How you hold the handgun has a lot to do with felt recoil. A little physics comes into play. The greater the mass, the more energy is needed to move it. (in other words, a heavier pistol will "absorb" recoil more than a light pistol)
