It's a blast. I shoot in both the CDP and ESP divisions. Prior to IDPA I had been shooting in a local indoor league and while it was fun it was limited in the different scenarios that could be set up and there wasn't nearly as much movement. I went to my first IDPA match simply to watch. One of the first guys I met came up to me and introduced himself and asked if was going to be shooting that day. I explained that I was just there to watch and didn't even bring a gun. He then offered one of his own and encouraged me to join them. I tell that story because it's indicative of the great people who you will meet in IDPA. I begged off that night, but showed up the following week to shoot. In my first match I got a lot of good tips from my fellow squad members and all were patient and helpful. They welcome new shooters and put a priority on safety and having fun.

I encourage you to join us. You'll have a good time, meet nice people, and improve your gun handling skills.

Biggest advice is to go watch a match before shooting in one. There is a lot of thinking a new competitor must process. Study the rules and practice draw from concealment (with gun unloaded) before you compete the first time.

Being prepared mentally to compete with a loaded gun can not be overstated enough. Hope this helps.

I got invited to go check it out, but unfortunatly im outta commission for a lil while. Im not a new shooter. I have just never shot in comp before. I do all my training on my own. I just figure idpa looked like betta senarios than i could put together by myself. Thank u for ur imput. Lookin foward to gettin into it. Hopefully i get healed up an get into a match after the holidays.

I guess it depends on the group you get with, but my experience with IPSIC,USPSA, and IDPA is

1) It gets to be an equipment race.
2) Hurry up, hurry up.
3) The shooting facility.
4) Some folks are just scary to be around.

I freakin loved it when I did one a month or so ago, tons of fun and good practice you often won't get somewhere else... And really good people there too!!

You should give it a try. Don't worry about equipment. You have a gun right? If you have a gun, 3 mags or speed loaders if it is a revolver, mag or speedloader holders and a holster. Most clubs are not picky about the equipment for a new shooter. They just want you to be safe and have a good time.

When you first get started don't worry about being fast. Worry about being safe and accurate. Speed will come later. If you decide you like it (and you will) you can buy the proper equipment.

Go to IDPA.com and download a copy of the rule book. Just skim through it. Don't worry about memorizing it. That is what the safety officers do. They will tell you if you break a rule. Just be safe.

Try it. You will have the time of your life.

What city are you near. I would not be surprised if there is a member here that lives near you. I have met up with another member at my club. If you live in Colorado you would be welcome to join me.
