An eventful weekend of chicken-sniping

[and regular sniping]

Well yesterday was my first visit to 'The Dark Side' ie .22 metallic silhouette competition. I was warned it would be hard - hell yeah it was. The targets are so small: that 50m zoomed targets pic with the 'chickens' [ha] illustrates that well. From 100m you cannot see anything at all with the naked eye, as you can gather from the long shot. I managed to score what I considered a supremely woeful 5/40...but in fact that isn't considered too bad. The guy who runs it, Ellis, got a top score of 13 and he's been shooting for many years...so you can see, heh.

But I can understand how it would really improve centrefire rifle performance; so much lighter to hold, no recoil, you can really concentrate on technique etc. Now all I have to do is find a M1907 sling for the .223...which are just impossible to buy anywhere; target shooting seems too specialised an application in this country, apparently. Shops here seem to stock hunting slings alone. Gonna have to import!

Today's .223 service rifle competition I did surprisingly well in, no doubt helped by the fact I FINALLY worked out a fairly comfortable sitting position that didn't require constant adjustment  and despite much swearing under my breath & wrestling with the sling on the club rifle (it is a leather one like the type I want, but has no keepers to hold a tight loop around the upper arm, so the bloody thing keeps slipping down all the time. Which kinda breaks your concentration lol)

We shot a highpower target which I haven't seen before; ie smaller in centre area than the usual 4ft-ers. Was quite surprised to find out I'd come 1st in C grade...huh?! My detail also won the 4 sec team sniper-snap, so a pretty successful day all round.

Also, someone in the club has 'volunteered' me to do the SSAA Range Officers course on the 31st...and I mean 'volunteered' in the time-honoured military sense of the word...so I guess it's not like I had a choice, lol. Should be interesting :)
