I was told by a local shop that you have to have a store front to present in order to get an FFL.

I know 2 people that run a business from their home and have an FFL - but it's extremely rare and very hard to accomplish. One fella has had his for quite a few years and he told me he probably could not get one today as the BATFE is really making it difficult for a non brick & mortar business...

Spittin- not correct. To get an 01 Dealers FFL, you must have a business, complete with zoning that will allow business in a residential neighborhood, a business license, sales tax number, yadda yadda yadda- but YES, you CAN get a FFL for a home based business, if you jump thru the hoops. I also have 3 friends that do business from home- one is a really good smith.

So, what I'm getting out of this is that it is easier to get FFL if you have a store front, but if the situation is right and the hoops are leapt and all, it is possible to have a home based FFL. What are the hoops, exactly? Local business zoning laws?

Zoning is a biggie and BATFE requires a dedicated place to conduct the business with appropriate "features". My buddy uses his converted basement that has it's own entrance and alarm system and is really quite separate from the house. The other guy has a concrete external garage that is setup as his place of business.

From talking to them, BATFE really makes it tough to get an FFL without a formal storefront and is very demanding - but it can be done...

For those who think I was joking about the leftist commit...
I will get my Msters in Public Health (Health Policy and Management) From the School of Rural Public Health at the Texas A&M Health Science Center. This school requires all first year students in my concentration to watch and report on M. Moores film, Sicko. In classes such as PHPM 644, Health Policy and Politics I, the teacher walkin the first day and says she is in fact pro Universal Healthcare, and is in fact a Socialist. I also spent over 100 research hours and 20 compilation hours on a Anti-Gun Control Presentation that lasted 30mins before I was timed-out. I got a B becasue of lack of evidence. Teachers and proffesors every day drop deaming comments about rebulicans and conservatives and the organizations they support and that support them. Now tell me again..."there is no liberalism in at Texas A&M". I though it was bad when I was there to get a Bachelors of Science in Biology, where anything Christian is wrong and not one professor I ever had in my upper level classes could leave faith out of the class.

I have applied for my FFL with my cousin who work with park and wildlife.

Also, to tango and everyone...

Liberals know that the best (not fastest) way to change the country in thier direction is indirectly in the education system.

...and does anyone really think that anywhere in College Station or Texas for that matter someone would get beat up for being liberal, only on Northgate about 30 min before closing time.

Maybe he ment you had to have a physical location already establshed for the business and if it's a home based business the home would do that. Like i said, I never tried to get one, it just came up in conversation.

I do have an 01 FFL, and operate from my home. I have had it for about 15 years, so the "hoops" my have changed since I got mine. But with that being said, I was inspected a few months ago, and we sat down at the kitchen table which I told him is where I do my work. It was the first inspection I've had since I first got my license, and I was never inspected before receiving it.

I was told that as long as I post all of the required signage and cover the required details (gun locks, strawman purchases, etc...) that I was fine. I specifically asked what type of security was required by them for on hand inventory and was told "the BATFE only requires that your firearms inventory be kept behind a locked door, they encourage you to have more, but that is all they require"

I think a lot has to do with local zoning laws. I know where I live I was looking into a home based FFL to sell on the internet and to my close friends and the county said NO WAY IN HELL are you getting zoning for a home based gun store.

You don't have to have a business lic here but you do have to submit paperwork to run a home based business and you have to provide what the business does.
