Alright, so Is it possible to purchase a 14.5 inch ar15 barrel only, so I can get all my stuff mounted, and pin the FH myself, or must I buy it prepinned/have an FFL or gunsmith do it for me? __________________ ------------Space Not for Hire.----------- |

A short barrel by itself does not make a short barreled rifle. It would have to be attached to the upper, which in itself is not a firearm until it is attached to the lower reciever. In California, the flash suppressor is "not" legal on a semi auto, center fire rifle that has a detachable magazine, neither is a threaded barrel. If you have an AR that is registered as an assault weapon in California, you can use the 14 1/2" barrel with the flash suppressor, as long as the suppressor is permanently attached by blind pinning and welding the pin holes or by permanently welding the suppressor in place. The overall barrel length will have to be 16" or more. If it is under 16", it will be a short barreled rifle. In other words, to put a flash suppressor on a short barrel to make it a legal length of 16", it must be "non-removable"..........
You can do the work yourself, but do it properly...

AR-15's can be pistols as well. So short barrels are available legally for those as well. __________________ "Good people drink good beer."

danf_fl is absolutely right. I'm not suggesting anyone purchase a rifle with the intent of converting it. Just that short barrels are legal (unless there is some local, state law that I don't know about) because the AR-15 platform is not just a rifle platform. __________________ "Good people drink good beer."

Well, Far as I'm aware, it's not really legal to do an ar pistol in Cali, even with an unthreaded barrel.
But if I did go the 14.5 inch route i'd be able to do a fixed FH for length __________________ ------------Space Not for Hire.----------- |
