Now if you wanted to, (it would be illegal so don't) you could go by a pipe fitting with the female hole just smaller than the hole you would need for your barrel threads and drill it out. Then you could go online and order a tap for 1/2-28 threads and tap the hole you just drilled and it would work.
Or you can go on ebay and buy the adapter for $19.95. It is sold as a device to collect the solvent running out of the barrel from cleaning.

As goofy as it is; it's actually pretty cool and a damn good idea.

In the utilitarian sense...... Art, it is not.

One is pipe thread and one is machine thread. I fully agree with you that the actual metal piece that we we are talking about looks remarkably similar to a standard pipe bushing.
So we are on the same page then....
A $5.00 item other than the thread is common and readily available, but you have to pay the Government $200.00 and go though a 6 month background check, all to own something that is nothing more than a glorified pipe fitting...

That would be correct!
Don't you just love our wonderful government.
Why there is any regulation on any suppressor is rather bizarre.

just to be clear on this. anything you put on any firearm that reduces or suppresses the sound level even one decibel, that you have not applied or recieved a tax stamp for is illegal. doesn't matter whether you went to the hardware store and bought a pipe fitting or ordered one from one of the suppressor makers is irrelevent. if you put a two liter coke bottle on the end of your pistol and attach it with duct tape, then you have committed a felony. just something for people to think about.

You know, it's the damnedest thing, but I've owned guns all my fairly long life, carry one concealed every day, and have never felt the slightest urge to fit one with a suppressor!

Weird, I know. But if, God forbid, I have to shoot someone, I expect making noise doing it will be the very least of my worries.

The title "Much Ado About Nothing" comes to mind when I read threads like this.
